Detroit, Michigan – Bar & Bar-B-Q

Slows Bar-B-Q

Slows knows barbecue!  Whether you go to Slows on Michigan Avenue in Detroit’s oldest neighborhood,  Corktown, or you go to Slows To-Go on Cass Avenue you are in for some of the finest barbecue in the state of Michigan and then some.  Talk to Adam Richman from the Travel Channel’s Man V. Food and you may hear more about the Mac-n-Cheese than the BBQ.  Talk to others and you may hear more about the beer.  The beer list is amazing.  On tap you will find 21 choices, of the 21 there is always 12-16 beers from Michigan breweries.  Talk to our writers who have been here and they all say WOW!

Detroits BBQ

It started with an idea for a restaurant and after Chef and part owner Brian Perrone came up with his own recipes for BBQ that couldn’t be beaten, he and his brother Terry Perrone and Michael Metevia, Phillip Cooley and Ron Cooley joined together and we now have Slows. Restoring old buildings with almost all reclaimed wood, the buildings are a great part of the revitalization of Detroit.  If Detroit keeps going in this direction watch out!

Start with the Carolina Style Pulled Pork plate and you are in for a treat.  This juicy pork just falls apart.  The flavors are mouth watering to say the least.  Add some sides like the Sweet Potato Mash, which is hard to do and they do it right with a perfect amount of sweet and some creative seasoning. Even you non-sweet potato lovers WILL like them.   The Mac-n-Cheese is homemade with large shells, a small pop of seasoning, a boom of pepper and blended with melted cheeses.

Maybe you want a sandwich.  Try The Reason.  The Reason starts with bread from Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor which by itself is special. Then add some slow smoked pork bathed in Slows amazing sauce, topped with a nice, mild coleslaw and dill pickle strips and you have found THE REASON to stop at slows even when you are in a hurry and need a sandwich to go.  Looking for something different?  The Yardbird is phenomenal. The Yardbird comes on your choice of Zingermans bread and is covered in smoked Amish chicken breast which has been drenched in their out of this world mustard sauce.  Sounds amazing doesn’t it?  Well, add cheddar, sauteed mushrooms and a couple strips of applewood bacon and we think this sandwich is more like a yardbird on speed!

The food at Slows is specially slow cooked and prepared with many local fresh ingredients and something you will want to savor because you will not get back quick enough for your taste buds. The wine list is great and the beer list has a few beers for every beer lover.  They also have a special shot for you with the help of McClures Pickles.

Start with a shot of

Follow with a quick shot of McClure’s pickle brine and throw in a chunk of a McClures pickle

There you have Slows “Pickle Back”   It’s a fun shot and a must try!

Slows Bar-B-Q’s beer, wine, mixed drinks, the Pickle Back shot, chicken, pulled pork or the occasional rib tips is all bar and barbecue and it’s better than all good.

You used to have to go out of  state to get barbecue like this, well this time we are headed to the BIG D and we don’t mean Dallas!!!

We had the Mary Ann Brisket Sandwich and the Triple Threat featuring the Pulled Pork, Bacon and Ham both were delicious! I liked that they had a variety of sauces to choose from. I liked their Apple BBQ sauce..not too sweet, not too vinegary. Very good!
